How to remove ActiveX Plugins in Internet Explorer

When using "Manage add-on", it is sometimes not possible to actually remove an ActiveX object. Only "Enable/Disable" and "Update" are possible, especially with Internet Explorer 6.0.x.
Here you can read a fail-safe method how to do so.

Instead of going to "Manage Add-ons":

  • Internet Explorer 6.0.x: Tools > Manage Add-ons
  • Internet Explorer 7.x: Tools > Internet Options > [Tab] Programs > Manage add-ons

You should …

  1. First close all instances of Internet Explorer (and also MSN because this is tightly interlaced with Internet Explorer :( ).
  2. Open your Control Panel and navigate to "Internet Options"
    • Internet Explorer 6.0.x: Click on [Settings ...] in the section [Temporary Internet Files]
    • Internet Explorer 7.x: Click on [Settings] in the section [Browsing History]
  3. Click on [View Objects]
  4. In this window you can delete unwanted ActiveX components.
  5. Close everything. It is now un-installed!
  6. Leave a comment on this blog :-)

For Microsoft Internet Explorer development team, "Integration" and "Intertwinement:" are likely synonyms ;)
